How much tax do I pay on crypto?
A $10,000.00 crypto gain on $80,000 of US income costs about $2,200.00 in federal tax if sold within a year, or $1,500.00 if held more than a year, after the $16,100 standard deduction for a single filer. The UK, Germany, India and Australia tax it differently; the table shows each country's rules.

Income here is before tax: the Personal Allowance comes off it first. How long you held the coin doesn't matter. The cost is the pooled average cost of your holding, after same-day and thirty-day matching; one purchase price is exact only if you bought the whole holding at once.

Worked examples and questions for this country: Australia crypto tax calculator.
What counts as a taxable event
Selling crypto for money, swapping one coin for another and paying for something with crypto are all disposals: each one can make a gain or a loss. Buying crypto, holding it and moving it between your own wallets are not taxable events. Rewards from staking or mining are usually taxed as income when you receive them, which this calculator doesn't cover.
Do fees reduce the tax?
Yes. A fee to buy is added to your cost and a fee to sell comes off what you got. With a $50 fee each way, the US example becomes a cost of $10,050 and proceeds of $19,950: a $9,900.00 gain, taxed $2,178.00, which is $22.00 less. Enter both figures with fees already applied.
The formula
gain = what you sold for β what you paid (fees added to the cost and taken off the proceeds)
tax = the gain stacked on top of your other income, taxed at the rates of the bands it reaches
held more than a year (US, Germany, Australia) = lower US rates, tax-free in Germany, 50% off the gain in Australia
India = gain Γ 30%, plus a surcharge on high incomes, plus 4% cess on both
Australia = the gain, after any discount, stacked on taxable income, plus the 2% Medicare levy
Questions
How much tax do I pay on crypto?
It depends on your country, your other income and how long you held. A $10,000.00 gain on $80,000 of US income costs $2,200.00 sold within a year and $1,500.00 held longer. In the UK, gains above Β£3,000 a year are taxed at 18% or 24%; Germany taxes a gain held a year or less as income (tax-free under β¬1,000) and nothing after; India takes a flat 30% plus 4% cess; Australia taxes it as income, with 50% off after 12 months, plus the 2% Medicare levy.
Is it cheaper to hold crypto for a year?
In the US, Germany and Australia, yes. A $10,000.00 gain on $80,000 of US income costs $2,200.00 sold within a year and $1,500.00 held more than a year; in Germany it becomes tax-free, and in Australia 50% of it comes off after 12 months. In the UK and India the holding period doesn't change the tax.
What are taxable events?
Selling crypto for money, swapping it for another coin and paying for something with it are all disposals that can be taxed in the US, the UK, Germany, India and Australia. Buying and holding, or moving coins between your own wallets, isn't. Staking and mining rewards follow other rules and aren't calculated here.
Do fees reduce my tax?
Yes, in the US, the UK, Germany and Australia: fees to buy add to your cost and fees to sell come off the proceeds, so the gain is smaller. On the $10,000.00 US example, $50.00 each way cuts the tax from $2,200.00 to $2,178.00. India allows no deduction other than the cost of acquisition, and whether a fee paid to buy counts toward that cost is unsettled, so the calculator takes off only the cost you enter.
Is a crypto loss deductible?
No tax is due on a loss. In the US a net capital loss offsets other gains and up to $3,000 of other income a year, and the rest carries forward. In the UK a reported loss offsets gains; in Germany it offsets only other private-sale gains; in Australia it offsets capital gains only and the rest carries forward. India doesn't let a crypto loss offset anything.
Which countries does this cover?
The US (2026), the UK (2026/27), Germany (2026), India (2026-27) and Australia (2026-27). Russia and Turkey aren't covered yet.
How is the estimate calculated?
The gain is what you sold for minus what you paid, with fees added to the cost and taken off the proceeds. It is stacked on top of your other income and taxed at the rates of the bands it reaches, after the US standard deduction, or in the UK after the Personal Allowance comes off your income and the annual exempt amount off the gain. India taxes it at a flat 30% plus 4% cess. Australia takes 50% off a gain held 12 months, then adds the 2% Medicare levy.
Is this tax advice?
No. It estimates the tax on one sale. It leaves out state and local tax, other gains and losses in the same year, and your other deductions and credits. Check your figures with a tax professional before you file.
